San Miguel de Allende – The Arts and Artisans
San Miguel de Allende has become a major player as a center for art worldwide. For more than fifty years, this humble colonial puebla has attracted foreign artists as well as Mexican artists. The air of San Miguel de Allende is very clear which attracts many landscape artists.
San Miguel can lay claim to the highest ratio of art galleries per capita of any city in Mexico; hence it is called the ‘Montmartre of Mexico’ rivaling the art enclaves of Carmel, Key West, and Santa Fe.
Galeria Atenea is famous for its national and international artists as well as its contemporary art.
Fabrica la Aurora was an old textile factory completed in 1902. It is complete with 12 stone arches, a wrought iron gate and an open-air patio. It was a working factory until 1991. Today it houses over 45 galleries, studios, restaurants and shops of all kinds. To learn more about the shops in Fabrica la Aurora, go to whatshotinsanmiguel.com.
Art gallery openings and shows are by far the most frequent and largest of this city’s attractions. It is because of the importance of art in this community that you can almost always find an art exhibit and shows taking place year around. You can get more information at the Biblioteca Publica (public library).
