August Festivals in San Miguel de Allende

There are 2 main festivals in San Miguel de Allende in August:

• August 15^th to August 17^th, Assumption of the Virgin Mary or La Asuncion de la Virgen Maria

  The Assumption of the Virgin Mary or La Asuncion de la Virgen Maria

  

August 15^th is the celebration of the Assumption of the Virgin Mary or La Asuncion de la Virgen Maria. It is celebrated throughout the country with special Masses and processions. It is an especially large celebration in Huamantla, near Puebla. If you plan to go, stay in Puebla, as there are only a few hotels in Huamantla.

The festivities start at midnight and continue on through the next day.

Catholics have observed the feast of the Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary for hundreds of years. They recognize it as the “Heavenly Birthday” or the day that Mary was received into heaven. Her acceptance into Heaven is seen, by Christians, as a symbol of Jesus’ promise that they too will be received.
