January Festivals

January Festivals in San Miguel de Allende

In January, in San Miguel de Allende, there are three main festivals:

·
January 6th, Three Kings Day, or Dia de los Santos Reyes.

·
January 17th, Blessings of the Animals.

·
January 21st, Ignacio Allende Unzanga’s birth day.

Día de los Santos Reyes or Three Kings Day

Three kings Day San Miguel de Allende

Three Kings Day is celebrated on January 6th. Traditionally children receive the majority of their Christmas gifts on this day, rather than on Christmas day.Three King’s Day commemorates the Three Wise Men, Melchior, Gaspar and Baltazar, who followed the star to Bethlehem, bringing gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh. The giving of gifts on this day is the re-enactment of this journey and their arrival in Bethlehem. A special sweet bread, Rosca de Reyes, is eaten. It is studded with bits of candied fruit and embedded with a small doll which represents the Christ child. The figure symbolizes the hiding of the child from Herod’s army. Whoever finds the figure in their slice of sweet bread on Three King’s Day is supposed to give a party on February 2nd, Candlemas Day, or Día de la Candelaria, offering tamales and atole (A thick, warm drink made with masa and sweetened with cinnamon and brown sugar) to the guests. Candlemas Day is the feast of Mary’s purification and was marked by a candle procession. It is also known as Groundhogs Day.

Blessing of the Animals

The Blessing of the Animals

The “blessing of the animals” is celebrated on January 17th. It is a religious holiday in which the Catholic Church allows animals to enter the church for a blessing. It is held in grateful recognition of the huge contribution animals have made for mankind. It is also the birthday of Saint Anthony, the Abbott. St. Anthony was born in the third century, in Egypt, to wealthy Christian parents. After his parents died, he gave up all of his wealth and lived as a hermit. He was recognized for his gift of healing, especially with animals. He is usually depicted dressed as a monk accompanied by a pig, a dog and a cock, often with the joyful expression for which he was renowned during his lifetime.
