Semana Santa or Holy Week(s) is the celebration of the last days of Christ’s life. It starts on Palm Sunday and goes through to Pascua. Pascua is the week from Easter Sunday to the following Saturday. Depending on which month Easter falls, Semana Santa is celebrated in either March or April. The festivities begin with the dedication of the alters to our Lady of Sorrow and builds up to the procession of the Holy Burial or Santo Entierro on Good Friday. There are passion plays and an elaborate reenactment of the twelve stages of the cross. On Easter Sunday, there is another large procession. Afterwards they blow up and burn images of Judas.

Semana Santa is the second most important holiday in Mexico. Children get two weeks off from school. Many Mexican families plan long holidays. So make your reservations early for this busy time of year.
