Taking Pets In to Mexico
You’re planning a trip into Mexico and wondering if can take your favorite pet? Dogs and cats are okay, but taking a bird is not a good idea, because they will be confiscated when you return to the United States.
If you are arriving by plane, each airline’s have their own restrictions and charges. So be sure to check with your carrier.
In general your dog or cat needs their current vaccinations. These must be administered 15 days prior to their entry into Mexico. The current list of vaccines, as of 2007 is:
- Rabies
- Distemper
- Hepatitis
- Pip
- Leptospirosis
**Note** Requirements change frequently, check with your veterinarian before you go.
Your pets also need a health certificate from your veterinarian.
Check with your veterinarian about specific health issues for your pet. Be sure to have a supply of their special food and you may consider filtered water for awhile and then slowly mix the local water with filtered until they are acclimated. I give my pets only filtered water, always.
A great website dedicated to taking your pets into Mexico is
Horses
Horses can be brought from the United States to Mexico and vice versa. Crossing the border with horses requires permits, veterinary health verifications, and brief quarantines. Most horse people advise hiring an import broker who specializes in horses to make the crossing.
