What stuff can I take with me when I move to Mexico (with an FM3 or FM2)?
You can take anything you want as long as it is not drugs or guns, but you must declare it at the border.
If you don’t declare it, customs can confiscate your stuff, your car and arrest you for smuggling. If you declare some items, but leave some stuff out, the same thing can happen. If these articles are taken, they will not be returned!
The best thing to do if you are bringing in a lot of stuff is to list all of the items on an Inventory Visa. This is obtained from the Mexican Consulate and when completed, it is verified, approved and then stamped by the Mexican consulate. You also have to show your FM3 or FM2, your passport and a check for the fee (the amount changes so check with the Mexican Consulate)
Each itemized list starts with a letter stating your name, your home address, and your new address in Mexico. It should correspond with each box. For example, Box #1 has sheets, towels, bed spreads and a Bose alarm clock/stereo. The Bose has to have the serial # and model # listed. Do not put it into its original box! Items that are less than 6 months old are not duty free. The rule of thumb is even if it is new, unpack it and repack it with other used items. Be sure to include the value of the product on the itemized list.
**Note** Be careful when you write down the serial numbers if they are incorrect, and you are caught, you may pay a fine and the item maybe confiscated. If they find more items with mistakes, totaling more than $30,000 pesos you could be arrested and your stuff will be confiscated.
Even if you hire someone to transport your stuff, you are still liable for the inventory list and its contents.
